Quantum Zero: Understanding Full-Body Design and Fabrication Considerations

Quantum Zero continues to evolve with increasingly detailed and sophisticated designs, making it important for designers and fabricators to understand how colour and veining may behave through the thickness of each slab.

Quantum Zero is a resin-based surface containing no more than 1% crystalline silica. Most colours within the range are classified as mostly full body. However, “full body” does not mean that the colour, veining or patterning will always continue uniformly from the surface through the full 20 mm slab thickness. Some variation is an inherent characteristic of the manufacturing process, particularly in designs with more complex veining.

Colours such as Luna White, Polar and Reflections are generally more consistent through the slab thickness. Designs including Argento, Leggero, Verona Gold, Monte Bianco and Calacatta Roma may show greater variation when the internal slab body is exposed. More intricate designs, including Champagne, Ambra, Imperiale, Calacatta Reale, Verde Fantastico and Viola Lusso, may also display variation through the thickness due to their complexity and intended visual character.

The Palazzo Series features a monochrome slab body with a three-dimensional printed surface design. As a result, the veining and patterning are present on the surface and do not continue through the 20 mm slab. Ivory Perla combines a full-body slab with surface print enhancement. While variation is present through its slab body, the internal colouration is not designed to directly match the finished surface.

These characteristics should be considered when specifying edge profiles, surface treatments and detailed fabrication. We do not recommend modifications that alter the finished surface, including grinding, polishing, rebating, recessing, integrated drainers, pedestal curves, waterfall curves or extensive edge rounding. Care should also be taken when producing bullnose profiles.

Curved forms created by mechanically fixing multiple facets and grinding the edges may expose differences between the surface design and the slab body. Any fabrication modification, including curving, is undertaken at the fabricator’s discretion and responsibility.

We recommend early collaboration between the designer, specifier and fabricator so that edge details, exposed surfaces and fabrication requirements can be reviewed before the final Quantum Zero colour is selected. Our full Surface Modifications Guidelines can be read here.
