The third session of this year’s KBDi Conference – proudly sponsored by Blum Australia – reminded us that good design isn’t just about aesthetics or function, but also about how a space makes people feel.
Hygge and the Human Experience
Lauren Li, an award-winning interior designer, author, lecturer, and founder of Sisällä, guided delegates through the Nordic concept of hygge. This Danish word, she explained, has no direct English equivalent but is best described as a feeling of warmth, comfort, and contentment. From her travels in Stockholm to her work across Melbourne and London, Lauren showed how hygge can be woven into interiors using natural materials, textured lighting, warm colours, and furniture arrangements that foster connection.
From Industrial to Inviting
Lauren observed a clear move away from the cool, industrial styles of recent years to softer, more welcoming interiors. Clients are increasingly seeking homes that feel lived-in, human-scaled, and emotionally comforting. She encouraged designers to consider the four core elements of hygge – design, colour, lighting, and comfort – when creating kitchens and living spaces, making sure that these areas not only look stunning but also support daily rituals and family connection.
Designing for Connection and Well-Being
With loneliness and social isolation rising in Australia, Lauren highlighted the important role designers play in creating spaces that encourage human connection. Kitchens and communal areas, she observed, should be designed to promote gathering, conversation, and a sense of belonging. By applying principles like lagom – a Swedish idea meaning ‘just enough’ – designers can create spaces that feel balanced and enhance wellbeing without excess.
Finding Your Design Identity
Lauren also shifted her focus to the designers themselves. She encouraged delegates to reflect on their design identity – to niche down, embrace the style they genuinely love, and attract clients who align with their strengths. Sharing her own journey of taking on projects outside her preferred style, Lauren emphasised how authenticity not only strengthens brand identity but also results in greater satisfaction in practice.
Her final message was clear: design with intention, foster connection, and always keep well-being at the heart of your work.
The KBDi team extends our sincerest thanks to Blum Australia for sponsoring this session and for their ongoing commitment to innovation and design excellence in our industry.
