Mike Schirmer is the director and designer at Goolwa Kitchens and Wardrobes.

I started in the kitchen industry in 1977 as an apprentice carpenter and joiner, and in those days everything was done by hand with little machinery and minimal cabinet hardware. Today we have one of the most technically advanced manufacturing facility in South Australia.

My Apprenticeship was four years and I completed a TAFE course in business management. The cabinet industry is an ever evolving industry so you are always learning. I am constantly doing webinars on cad drawing software and employ a coach in our business. I started my own kitchen manufacturing business in 1985 and our business is still manufacturing today.
I have been designing kitchens since I was an apprentice and I am a member of the Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute (KBDI) Housing Industry Association (HIA) and the Australian Cabinet & Furniture Association (ACFA). I have won awards at state and national level from all associations.

I have travelled extensively and incorporate a lot of what I have seen in overseas kitchen design trends into my designs here in Australia. For example about 5 years ago I travelled to Sri Lanka and noticed that they used concrete for kitchen bench-tops with very few cabinets, mainly due to cost. So I have tried to incorporate that concept into my designs now. You see this in a lot of kitchen magazines today.

When I was in Milan at another trade show I was inspired by the use of shadow lines under bench-tops and mitred panels on corners instead of butt joins. Even mitred end panels where they return onto drawer fronts – I use them in my design as a point of difference.
