How to become a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) or a Certified Bathroom Designer (CBD)
General Information
Designers who have the appropriate training and experience are able to apply for accreditation to become a Certified Kitchen Designer or a Certified Bathroom Designer.
To apply for accreditation designers must:
- be members of KBDi
- have the appropriate KBDi Certificate in Kitchen Design or Certificate in Bathroom Design (this can be achieved through undertaking the training course or through RPL)
- have 3 1/2 years of experience as a designer
- submit a portfolio of work to the National Accreditation Committee for review
- be committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
The assessment of applicants to receive accreditation as a Certified Kitchen Designer and/or a Certified Bathroom Designer is undertaken by a National Accreditation Committee appointed by the Board. All National Accreditation Committee members are required to hold KBDi CKD and/or CBD accreditation.
Accredited Members have their names entered on a membership register in the category of ‘Accredited Designer Member’.
A system of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is offered by the Institute to ensure KBDi Accredited Designers remain up to date with industry developments. Designers’ CPD records are maintained by the National Office.
Accreditation certificates will be current for one year. Re-issue of accreditation will occur every year on satisfactory attainment of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and renewal of KBDi membership.
The application is done in 2 parts, the initial application is made by sending the attached form and payment.
KBDi will contact you and give you guidelines for electronic submission of the portfolio once the initial application has been processed.

Training
Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications.
- Certificate in Kitchen Design issued by KBDi
- Certificate in Bathroom Design issued by KBDi
- Certificate IV in Design of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces (specialty in Kitchen Design) issued by Designer Training P/L
- Certificate IV in Design of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces (specialty in Bathroom Design) issued by Designer Training P/L
- Certificate IV in Design of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces (specialty in Kitchen Design) issued by another Registered Training Organisation (RTO)**
- Certificate IV in Design of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces (specialty in Bathroom Design) issued by another RTO**
**Please note where training has not been undertaken by Designer Training Pty Ltd there may be supplementary training before meeting the requirements for becoming a Certified Kitchen Designer or a Certified Bathroom Designer
Work Experience
Applicants must have demonstrated professional experience as a kitchen or bathroom designer with a minimum total accumulated experience of three and a half years full time based on a minimum average of 30hrs per week for 45 weeks of the year where the primary function was the design of kitchens or bathrooms. (or equivalent part time).
Referees
Applicants must provide the names of:
- Two referees from employers or professional people they have worked with who are familiar with their standard or work eg senior designer, architect, engineer, other senior professionals.
- Two client referees who are willing to be asked questions about the quality and professionalism of the applicants work.
Portfolio
Applicants must submit a portfolio of two recent projects in electronic format. The guidelines for this will be issued once the initial application has been processed.
- Plan
- Structural Change Plan. (If changes are minor, these may be included on the main plan.)
- Mechanical Plan
- Elevations (two minimum)
- Specification
- Design Statement (design rationale)
